Finding a Dealer

What Should I Bring to a Bad Credit Dealership?

A clean document folder can prevent delays and give you more time to review the car and financing instead of chasing paperwork.

Documents commonly requested

Requirements vary by lender, so call before visiting. Common items include a government-issued ID, recent pay stubs or other income records, proof of residence, insurance information, and references. Self-employed applicants may be asked for bank statements or tax records.

Bring only what the dealer says is needed. Do not leave original identity or financial documents behind, and avoid sending sensitive files through an unsecured channel.

  • Driver’s license or accepted photo identification
  • Recent proof of income
  • Current utility bill or lease if proof of residence is requested
  • Insurance contact details
  • Trade-in title, registration, payoff quote, and all keys when applicable

Bring your own deal worksheet

Write down your maximum out-the-door price and comfortable monthly ownership budget. Carry any direct lender quote and the current payoff amount for a trade. That keeps the discussion anchored to facts instead of a payment chosen on the showroom floor.

Ask for a printed breakdown of the vehicle price, taxes, fees, add-ons, trade value, down payment, amount financed, APR, term, and total of payments.

Leave time for verification

Confirm the vehicle identification number across the car, contract, and history report. Read the Buyers Guide and arrange an independent inspection. If financing is conditional, ask what remains unresolved and what happens to your down payment or trade if the deal is not approved on the stated terms. Take the unsigned paperwork home when you need time to read it.

Protect personal information

A credit application contains enough data to cause serious harm if mishandled. Ask why each document is needed and who will receive the application. Provide copies marked for the specific transaction when practical, retrieve originals, and take unused paperwork with you. Do not place a Social Security number on a general test-drive form unless a credit check is actually authorized.

Review the application before signing. Correct inflated income, a false job title, or any other entry that does not match what you supplied.

Prepare for the drive home

Bring a valid payment method for agreed funds, but do not carry a large cash amount without confirming the process. Arrange insurance and transportation in case you decide not to buy. Having a way home removes one source of pressure and makes it easier to walk away from an unsuitable car or contract.
